About Our Center

Our Mission

To identify, control & ultimately prevent toxic exposures
in the environment that threaten our children's health

The Environmental Health Center is devoted to the health and well-being of children, their parents and the general public through a program of education and action designed to identify and eliminate the carcinogens and environmental factors that assault and ravage our lives.

Our children are our future, and for this reason, the Environmental Health Center works to ensure children have the healthiest life possible.  Through dedicated commitment, expert research, education and practical solutions, we are convinced it can be achieved. We are certain one day we will be able to ultimately eradicate the major environmental risks our children are exposed to.

The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center® represents one of the first hospital-based programs whose specific mission is to identify, control and ultimately prevent toxic exposures in the environment that threaten our children's health.

How You Can Help

The key to protecting our children is prevention.

It is no secret that environmental factors play a role in a number of childhood diseases and cancers. The President's Panel report, "Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk" offers a comprehensive approach to reducing cancer and other health risks associated with environmental contaminants in our air, water, food, soil, excess radiation, and other harmful exposures. When we are aware of these toxins, we can eliminate and avoid them -- and help our children do the same. That is why we want to eliminate threats to our environmental health wherever they exist, including toxic cleaning chemicals and pesticides in schools, at work and around the home.

We must educate the public, our school boards, our employers and our legislators -- and work to improve our future today.  We urge you to join our efforts.  Together we can make a difference.

Simple Steps You Can Take to Reduce Environmental Exposures to Toxins

  • Replace traditional cleaning chemicals with products that contain plant-based ingredients.
  • Replace traditional lawn and garden pesticides with safer alternatives.
  • Avoid pesticide residues on food by buying organic produce.
  • Buy cosmetics and toiletries based on non-toxic ingredients.
  • Maintain a healthy, whole-food, organic diet whenever possible.
  • Avoid fish contaminated with mercury and PCB's and dioxins.
