What A Difference A Decade Makes!

It's been 10 years since we started The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center®, at Hackensack University Medical Center.  The Center is one of the first hospital based programs whose mission is to identify, control, and ultimately prevent toxic exposures in the environment that threaten our children's health.  And what a difference a decade makes!  Just look at what we've been able to accomplish with your help:

  • Developed the award winning Greening The Cleaning® program (GTC®), which has kept dangerous cleaning chemicals out of hundreds of hospitals, schools, businesses and homes.
  • Helped pass “Green Cleaning” Executive Orders in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as related legislation in 10 states.
  • Partnered with non-profit agencies to employ people with disabilities to package and distribute GTC® products nationwide.
  • Developed standards for Building Green at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), the nation’s fourth largest private healthcare facility, winning us recognition from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Built one of the first "green" hospitals in the country, the Sarkis & Siran Gabrellian Women's & Children's Pavilion at HUMC, named a "Top 10 Green Hospital" by The Green Guide.
  • Became a model for other healthcare facilities by establishing the Sustainable Hospitals Committee at HUMC. The committee created programs including recycling, healthier meal and vending machine options.
  • Established one of the few children's environmental health research programs in the country, which received CDC funding to explore Environmental Factors of Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders in NJ.
  • Created the nation's first large-scale study on a pesticide-free head lice treatment, for a more effective solution in the 6-12 million infestations among school children each year.
  • Established the Integrative Pediatric Oncology Group, which created the first of its kind study  to research the effects of Vitamin D among pediatric cancer patients.

With your help going forward, we will build on these successes and aim for more to help you and our nation's children by:

  • Eliminating indoor toxins where families learn and play by bringing the non-profit Greening The Cleaning line to more schools, businesses and municipalities.
  • Expand our website to include more practical health information for you and your family.
  • Launch the first-of-its-kind research study on kids and phthalate exposures.
