Air Pollution and Cold Days Spike Cardiac Events

There are physiological differences between a heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), often leading to sudden cardiac death (SCD), as SCA is triggered by an electrical change in the heart and not an arterial blockage, one of the symptoms conventionally associated with a heart attack.  While the number of heart attacks has declined in the past two decades, the number of SCDs has remained the same; research has found an association between air pollution, cooler weather and a higher incidence of SCD.  Read more...
