ANNUAL WALK TO REMEMBER HELD AT HACKENSACK UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER FOR FAMILIES WHO EXPERIENCED THE HEARTBREAK OF PREGNANCY LOSS OR NEWBORN DEATH

Hackensack University Medical Center continued its tradition of “walking to remember the steps you’ll never take” during the annual Walk to Remember, a special service to honor the memories of babies who died as a result of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, genetic disorders, stillbirth, or newborn death. A memorial service preceding the walk consisted of songs and readings by family and staff members in attendance, as well as a banner display of decorated fabric squares created in memory of loved ones. This year, the walkers paused to circle around a newly-planted butterfly bush in front of the Donna A. Sanzari Women’s Hospital, where each family member was handed an envelope containing a live butterfly. The butterflies were released simultaneously in a symbolic gesture to the loved but lost babies. The butterfly release was funded by The Forget Me Not Foundation, a non-profit founded by Melissa and Dave Barry of Ridgewood, in memory of their late daughter, Emma Grace Barry.
