Cancer Alley, home to toxic air, has a new foe: 'The virus is killing every day'

“People were dropping like flies,” said Dr Christy Montegut, his voice slowed by exhaustion. Dr Montegut, the coroner in St John the Baptist parish, recited a scene of devastation similar to the ones seen by coroners in major metropolitan areas of the United States overwhelmed with Covid-19 deaths. But St John the Baptist, a small jurisdiction of 43,000 people in southern Louisiana, is no sprawling metropolis.
