The Garden of Dreams Foundation, in partnership with the New York Knicks, recently teamed up once again to bring smiles and joy to the patients at The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC). Players Tim Thomas, forward (#2), and Wilson Chandler, forward (#21), and Kiarra Thomas, 11, came personally to deliver toys and Knicks bags filled with gifts such as baseball hats and water bottles to the children. This was the first visit for Mr. Thomas and Mr. Chandler.

“The Garden of Dreams Foundation continues to delight our patients at The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital and their dedication supports our never-ending quest to deliver the best to the children,” said Jeffrey R. Boscamp, M.D., of Tenafly, chairman and physician-in-chief of the children’s hospital.

“The visits illustrate what we have known for a long time – that healthcare benefits from treating the mind and spirit, in addition to the body,” said Alissa K. Sandler of Vernon, section chief of the SIDS Center of New Jersey and social work supervisor of Pediatric Specialty Services at The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital. The medical center was the only organization chosen in New Jersey, and one of 14 tri-state area partners. The Garden of Dreams Foundation is committed to helping children in crisis, whether they are suffering from devastating illness, homelessness, hunger, or extreme poverty.

HUMC is a full-voting member in the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI), the non-profit association that speaks on behalf of children's health needs and their caregivers. NACHRI is the foremost organization in the nation for children's hospitals. New York magazine ranked HUMC as a Best Hospital for Pediatrics, as well as being one of the Top 10 Overall Best Hospitals. In fact, HUMC is the only New Jersey hospital to receive a ranking on the Overall Best Hospitals list.

HUMC is a 775-bed teaching and research hospital and provides the largest number of admissions in New Jersey. The medical center was recently ranked in five specialties including geriatric care, gynecology, heart and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, and orthopedics in U.S. News’s 2008 publication of America’s Best Hospitals. HUMC is the only New Jersey acute-care hospital to receive rankings in five specialties. For two years in a row, HealthGrades® named HUMC one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals. This designation recognizes hospitals that have demonstrated superior clinical quality over a seven-year time period. HUMC is the only healthcare facility in New Jersey, New York, and New England to be named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals in 2007 and 2008. Only one percent of the nation’s hospitals can make this claim.
