Child Care Goes Greener

The Sarkis and Siran Gabrellian Child Care and Learning Center announces the implementation of two new environmentally-friendly initiatives.
The first initiative is going bleach-free! For many years, child care centers used bleach as a disinfectant as it was effective and inexpensive. However, since diluted bleach solutions become less efficacious after 24 hours, excess solution is poured down drains on a daily basis which is harmful to the environment. Bleach can worsen asthma , irritate skin, and is highly corrosive to pipes and machinery.
Nancy May, new Manager of the CCLC, worked closely with representatives Nadine D’Ambrosio and James Ronchi from The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center® to research and implement less toxic, safer cleaners and disinfectants that not only satisfied state regulations but were cost effective as well. The entire CCLC staff was trained in the use of each product, as well as proper cleaning methods, to keep the children and environment safe and healthy.
The CCLC’s second initiative is paper reduction. Standard practice had been for school notices to be printed on paper and placed in each child’s cubby to be taken home. One of the final notices to go out in this format was one requesting that each parent supply an e-mail address that they check often. As soon as there is 100% response to this request, all notices from that point forward will go home electronically.
