Significantly Sustainable

The past year (2018) was another triumphant year for Hackensack University Medical Center in maintaining our position as a national leader in health care sustainability. We achieved a significant milestone with our fifth consecutive Practice Greenhealth Top 25 Green Hospital award, and were the only hospital in the tri-state area to earn that distinction. We were also recognized as a Practice Greenhealth Top 10 Green Hospital in the areas of Chemicals, Leadership, Healthy Foods, Environmentally Preferable Purchasing and Less Waste. Check out the attached sheet for all of the 2018 sustainability highlights!

Working side by side with PSE&G, we won the Regional Energy Project of the Year award.  The award was given in recognition of energy efficiency work completed at Hackensack University Medical Center through the PSE&G Hospital Efficiency Program. The project is expected to save the medical center more than $1.3 million annually in energy costs.

Despite a highly challenging recycling market, we were able to achieve a 35% recycling rate on campus and identify ways to collaborate with local high schools to creatively repurpose our blue wrap. It’s also worth noting that we were the only medical center in New Jersey to host a summer green team in partnership with the Montclair State University PSE&G Institute for Sustainability Studies. The team consisted of students from multiple colleges and universities with diverse majors.

And finally, our 60,000 bees were also busy this past summer making delicious honey and creating opportunities for team member engagement and education.

More year end highlights:

.88% antibiotic-free meat and poultry and 85% sustainable seafood

.99.6% green cleaning compliance

.100% of furnishings purchased were free of 5 target chemicals according to HHI criteria

.97.1% of paints were free of V.O.C.s (volatile organic compounds)

Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”  We are grateful to all of you for your Creativity, Courage, Compassion and Collaboration and look forward to all that 2019 will bring!

With gratitude,
