Autism Legislation

 Autism CARES Act
A law signed in 2014 to reauthorize the Combating Autism Act of 2006 (Public Law 109-416). The Autism CARES Act allocates nearly $260 million annually through 2019 to fund autism research, training, intervention and other programs.  

Autism Insurance Legislation

As of 2016, all but 6 states passed insurance reform laws that require insurance coverage for autism screening, diagnosis, and care. New Jersey enacted its Autism Coverage Act in 2009, which was updated in 2015 to remove the age cap and visit limit for autism treatment.

Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act
Passed in 2014, the ABLE Act allows those with disabilities to open tax-exempt 529A savings accounts for disability-related expenses. In 2015, the IRS enacted changes that would make it easier for states to administer the ABLE Program.

Protection against Toxic Chemicals in Schools and Homes

Because children are more susceptible to the effects of environmental toxins such as pesticides and fungicides, recent legislation has been introduced to minimize children’s exposure to harmful chemicals.

School Environment Protection Act of 2012
To amend the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act to require local educational agencies and schools to implement integrated pest management programs to minimize the use of pesticides in schools and to provide parents, guardians, and employees with notice on the use of pesticides in schools, and for other purposes” For more information on the act, click here.

New York State Green Cleaning Law

This law mandates that NY schools purchase green cleaning products.

Transparent Environment in School Testing (TEST) for Lead Act of 2016
This act will require federally-funded schools to annually test school waters for lead. Lead poisoning is especially harmful to young children and is associated with permanent brain damage and learning delays.
