Growing Up Green Goes Global

New York, NY, April 15, 2008 – Appearing on the syndicated "Imus in the Morning" show, author, humanitarian and “green” expert, Deirdre Imus, launched a multi-state tour to promote her long awaited book, Growing Up Green, Baby and Child Care, the second volume in the best-selling Green This! series, released today by Simon & Schuster.

In her first appearance featuring Growing Up Green, Ms. Imus explained why she wrote the book, which focuses on raising a healthy child and provides common sense information aimed at reducing toxic exposures so that children can stay healthy.

“In Growing Up Green, I lay out all the practical, easy tips…realistic tips for moms and dads, on how to raise their children in a healthy way, in an ever increasing toxic world," said Ms. Imus. “This information is exactly what mom wants to and needs to know.”

In easy to understand chapters, Ms. Imus addresses specific issues facing children in every age group – from infants to adolescents and beyond – and educates busy parents on a variety of subjects.

Asked about toxic triggers in childhood cancer, Ms. Imus explained, “they are everywhere…We are seeing all these illnesses because they [children] are past the ‘tipping point.’ Our kids are overwhelmed with pesticides, cancer causing agents, and neurotoxins found in everything from food, cleaning products and personal care products to vaccines. Our children, from all different angles, are being exposed at very high levels now.”

Growing Up Green covers a range of subjects from “utero to university” with advice from nationally recognized children’s health experts and “green” pediatricians who support a philosophy of "whole child care” and treating each child as a unique individual. The book is filled with practical and simple solutions to many of the concerns confronting parents today. It includes:

A list of the environmental toxins most harmful to children and their source, so parents know exactly what to avoid in everything from clothing to toys. How to eat right for both mother and baby, during and after pregnancy. This includes tips on what kind of bottles to buy, greening your nursery, what’s lurking in the conventional grocery store milk aisle, and the power of a “blue moon treat.”

The benefits and risks associated with vaccines, and how to decide what’s best for your baby in one of his or her first and most important medical interventions. How to build on an early green foundation as your child grows up and goes off to school, including the importance of packing lunch, simple recipes for healthier snacking, how to make sure schools are providing alternatives to junk food, and emphasizing regular exercise.

Concise, easy-to-use guides, such as a web reference guide on green cleaning, green building, buying safer non-toxic toys, and personal care products. Speaking to listeners, Mrs. Imus explained how Growing Up Green can inspire parents to look at childcare in a new way that doesn’t need to be overwhelming. “The real key here is prevention…One step at a time,” said Ms. Imus. “I don’t think there are any small changes in life. There are single fundamental changes we can all make. By empowering people to know that they just have to make one change and getting that right…then they can go on to another.”

Following her appearance on "Imus in the Morning," Ms. Imus embarks on a tour that includes a series of book signings and speaking events at major book stores and appearances on programs such as ABC’s "Good Morning America" and "The View."  In an April 17th appearance on "Good Morning America," Ms. Imus discussed green pediatrics as one way to give babies a healthier start.  Buying baby bottles without the toxic hormone disruptor bisphenol-A (BPA) is another simple choice parents can make, Ms. Imus said.

Available in bookstores and on Amazon.com, Growing Up Greenprovides parents with helpful and vital information that even the busiest moms and dads can use to make educated choices for raising healthier, happier children.
