Deirdre_approved_new_photo_11-6_FinalDear Friends,

Winter is on its way, and with it comes the challenges of a festive and hectic holiday season. While it’s easy to get bogged down in the details of party planning and settle for the same old same old, there's no better time to branch out and try something new that will no doubt impress your guests – and even yourself! As always, The Deirdre Imus Environmental Health Center® (DIEHC)  is at your service with practical, healthy tips for getting through the holidays, and starting off 2019 on an inspired note.

In this issue, integrative physician Ben Kligler, MD provides solutions to protect your family from colds and flu by boosting your immune system. It’s easier than you think! Check out his five simple steps that can make all the difference for preventing nasty bugs from infecting you or your loved ones this time of year.

And yet as we settle in to celebrate, there remains an ongoing national health crisis. Lead has been found in water supplies around the country, from Flint, Michigan to Newark, NJ, right in our backyard.  No matter how far away you are, this public health emergency affects us all.  Read my blog below on the topic to find out what YOU can do to raise awareness and mitigate the effects of lead on children’s health.

We’re continuing to fulfill our mission of environmental health research here at the DIEHC, at Hackensack University Medical Center. Our institution recently collaborated with Georgetown University on a breast cancer study that was featured in Washington, DC at the annual meeting of the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program, presented by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Through this and other efforts, we’re collaborating with the best and the brightest in the field to find new ways of identifying and eliminating environmental exposures across our lifespan.

We thank you for supporting our work, and wish you a wonderful holiday and a healthy New Year!

Deirdre Imus
