Hackensack University Health Network Hospitals Among the Highest-Ranked in the 2013 Consumer Reports’ Surgery Ratings

August 2, 2013 11:27 AM

Hackensack University Health Network is proud to announce that two of its hospitals—HackensackUMC (Hackensack, NJ) and HackensackUMC Mountainside (Montclair, NJ)—are among the top four highest-ranked New Jersey hospitals in the inaugural Consumer Reports’ Surgery Ratings. More than 2,400 hospitals across the country were analyzed, and only four of the 59 New Jersey hospitals received a positive “better” rating.

“Hackensack University Health Network is proud of the exceptional care for which our hospitals are known,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of Hackensack University Health Network. “Now more than ever, patients are empowering themselves through research and guidance from consumer ratings agencies. These surgery ratings, from a reputable agency such as Consumer Reports, truly reflect the high level clinical excellence performed at both HackensackUMC and HackensackUMC Mountainside. Since acquiring Mountainside Hospital in 2012, we have worked together to elevate the level of care provided at both hospitals, sharing resources and best practices.”

The Consumer Reports Surgery Ratings rated hospitals based on patient outcomes during and after surgery. Twenty-seven surgical categories were analyzed through Medicare billing claims from 2009 to 2011. Consumer Reports looked at mortality rates, length of stay and complications to determine its rankings. The complete report will be in the September issue of Consumer Reports and online at www.ConsumerReports.org/cro/hospitalratings0913.

“This independent affirmation of the quality of our surgical program underscores that our community hospital is delivering on its goal of providing world class care in a convenient, suburban setting,” said John Fromhold, CEO of HackensackUMC Mountainside. “This recognition positions our hospital, our very talented, dedicated surgeons and surgical support staff among the best in the entire state.”

“I would like to thank Drs. Donald A. McCain and Massimo Napolitano, acting co-chairmen of the Department of Surgery at HackensackUMC, and the entire Department of Surgery for their exceptional work and commitment to providing exceptional surgical care to our patients.”

The Department of Surgery at HackensackUMC consists of 41 board-certified members, representing all the specialties in surgery.
