Hackensack University Medical Center and St. George’s University School of Medicine (SGUSOM) recently awarded its first recipient the Chairman’s Scholarship – Siddharth Bhattacharyya – son of Pritish Bhattacharyya, M.D., Department of Pathology at Hackensack University Medical Center. This scholarship was created to honor the following chairmen at the medical center: James R. Napolitano, Esq., chairman of the Hillcrest Board of Trustees; Joseph M. Sanzari, chairman of the Hackensack University Medical Center Board of Governors; Joseph Simunovich, chairman of the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation Board of Trustees; and Edward J. Ludwig, chairman of the Hackensack University Medical Center Advisory Board of Directors and member, Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation Board of Trustees.
The scholarship is a result of Hackensack University Medical Center’s academic partnership with St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada. It is offered to Hackensack University Medical Center’s medical and dental staff, employees, and/or their family members who currently attend SGUSOM. These scholarships are for 50 percent tuition for all four or remaining years of enrollment at the medical school, and are awarded based on merit and/or need.

“It gives me great joy to witness our first recipient receive this scholarship as a testament to his strong academic standing and accomplishments at St. George’s University School of Medicine,” said Joseph Feldman, M.D., chairman of the Emergency Department at Hackensack University Medical Center and director of Medical Education for SGUSOM at Hackensack University Medical Center. “Siddharth works fervently to achieve excellence, and that’s something we strive for not only at the medical center, but at the medical school as well. I congratulate him on this significant honor,” he added.
Scholarship eligibility requirements are as follows: the applicant must be a current employee of Hackensack University Medical Center for a minimum of one year or an immediate family member of an Hackensack University Medical Center medical, dental or staff employee in good standing; must have a letter of acceptance to St. George’s School of Medicine; and a one page essay (500 words) describing why one is deserving of a scholarship based on outstanding academic achievement, community work, leadership roles and/or financial hardships.
