The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital and the Department of Medical Education at Hackensack University Medical Center recently congratulated four college undergraduate students on completing the Alice and Marvin Gottlieb Summer Scholarship Program.

This year’s participants, Juliana Romano of Villanova University, Caitlin Schroen of Fordham University, Alexa Steuer of Brown University, and Ammar Charaf of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, completed an eight-week intensive learning program, dependent on student/faculty interaction.  The scholarship program is designed to aid students in making an experience-based judicious career choice.  “This program allows the students to explore various aspects of the healthcare profession while gaining first-hand knowledge about the roles and responsibilities of clinical staff, administrative personnel, support services, and the latest technological advances in the delivery of healthcare services,” explained Sue Salvatore, program coordinator for the Summer Scholars Program at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Marvin I. Gottlieb, M.D., Ph.D, chairman emeritus of the Department of Pediatrics and director emeritus of the Institute for Child Development at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, developed this program along with his wife, Alice Gottlieb, in 1980.  The program has been continued by Jeffrey R. Boscamp, M.D., chairman and physician-in-chief of the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, and is administered by Sue Salvatore, program coordinator for the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital.
