HackensackUMC Bariatric Surgery Program Receives Full Re-accreditation from American College of Surgeons

The Bariatric Surgery Program at Hackensack University Medical Center has been granted “Full Approval” of re-accreditation, and will remain an “American College of Surgeons Level 1 Accredited Bariatric Center,” for another three years.

The Bariatric Surgery Program, a division of HackensackUMC’s Department of Surgery, received its first full Level I accreditation in 2006, and subsequently received its second in 2009. As one of the region’sbariatric leaders, HackensackUMC’s board-certified surgeons provide state-of-the-art treatment options including gastric bypass, lap band, and revisional surgery. It employs an entire team of dieticians, counselors, surgeons and nurses who support patients before, during and after their procedures.

The American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program (ACS BSCN) accredits facilities in the United States that have undergone an independent, voluntary and rigorous peer evaluation in accordance with nationally recognized bariatric surgical standards.  The ACS BSCN Accreditation Program offers five accreditation levels for inpatient hospitals and outpatient facilities. Level 1 centers are hospitals that: have demonstrated they have the capacity to manage and have committed resources to provide complete bariatric surgical care; have high-volume practices and can manage the most challenging and complex patients; engage patients at all levels of obesity; and set standards of care for weight loss operations, ages, comorbid conditions, and reoperations.

Level 1 facilities must also perform 125 or more weight-loss operations per year, with at least one credentialed and experienced bariatric surgeon who has performed at least 100 weight-loss operations in the previous 24 months.
