Hackensack University Medical Center has been recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) as a Level 4 epilepsy center. Level 4 centers provide complex forms of intensive neurodiagnostics monitoring, as well as extensive medical, neuropsychological, and psychosocial treatment. Fourth-level centers also offer a complete evaluation for epilepsy, surgery, including intracranial electrodes, and provide a broad range of surgical procedures for epilepsy.

“Being recognized as a Level 4 center by the NAEC is a huge honor, and one that we have worked very hard to achieve,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of the Hackensack University Health Network. “As one of the top programs in the nation, our patients and their loved ones can rest assured they will receive the highest quality care possible.”

“HackensackUMC’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center has always been committed to providing our patients with the best doctors and the most advanced diagnostic techniques and treatment procedures available to manage and treat epilepsy,” said Arno Fried, M.D., chairman of the Neuroscience Institute at HackensackUMC.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes people to have recurring seizures, which happens when neurons in the brain send out the wrong signals. It can have any one of a number of causes, including but not at all limited to heredity, birth defects, traumatic brain injury, infection and tumors. Due to the varied causes of epilepsy, treatment best practices can vary greatly. Epilepsy and seizures affect nearly 3 million Americans of all ages, and approximately 200,000 new cases of seizures and epilepsy will occur annually.
