Hackensack University Medical Center is proud to announce that its executive vice president and chief legal officer, Audrey C. Murphy, Esq., R.N., was a finalist of the inaugural NJBIZ General Counsel of the Year Award in the Non-profit or Government Organization category. Murphy was recognized at an awards breakfast, which took place on Tuesday, June 5 at The Palace at Somerset Park.
“I would like to congratulate Audrey for being named a finalist of the General Counsel of the Year Award,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of HackensackUMC. “Audrey has been an integral and guiding part of our organization for many years, and it is an honor to work alongside someone with her level of experience, knowledge and general concern for the well-being of HackensackUMC.”
The first-ever General Counsel of the Year Award recognized general counsels, chief legal officers and corporate compliance professionals for the critical role they play in making their companies successful. The awards were divided into the following categories: Public Company with revenues up to $1 Billion; Public Company with revenues over $1 Billion; Public Company: Corporate Compliance Professional; Private Company with revenues up to $1 Billion; Private Company with revenues over $1 Billion; Private Company: Corporate Compliance Professional; and Non-profit or Government Organization.
Unlike many attorneys, Murphy’s road to chief legal officer began as a registered nurse. In addition to her full-time nursing schedule, Audrey began taking night classes and received her Juris Doctor Degree in January of 1992. As executive vice president/chief legal officer, Murphy is responsible for directing and providing counsel on all corporate and medical/legal matters, administering the medical center’s various insurance programs, and managing and directing all litigation.
“Audrey is a counselor to our entire leadership team and her guidance has helped position HackensackUMC for healthcare reform,” said Thomas Flynn, FACHE, chief compliance officer of HackensackUMC. “Among other innovations during her tenure, HackensackUMC switched to a Captive Insurance Company, a self-insured medical malpractice and general liability insurance. This change saved the medical center more than $5 million in malpractice lawsuit payments from 2010 to 2011. Audrey was also instrumental in establishing the medical center’s Conflict of Interest Policy beginning in 1992, at a time when this was not common in healthcare.”
Murphy began her career with HackensackUMC as associate counsel in 1992. She has consistently been promoted throughout her 20-year career with the medical center, and has filled the positions of: director of Risk Management, general counsel, vice president and general counsel, and senior vice president and general counsel. She has been in her current position of executive vice president/chief legal officer since January of 2010.
