HackensackUMC recently received a generous donation of $20,336 from Skanska USA, of Parsippany, NJ.  This contribution represents the proceeds from the first annual Dan Wurzburg Memorial Golf Outing.  Mr. Wurzburg, who passed away in January of 2011, was a patient of Dr. David Siegel and an employee of Skanska for 19 years.  The proceeds will benefit the Multiple Myeloma Fund through the HackensackUMC Foundation, which is used to support a number of initiatives.

“This generous donation by Skanska USA is used to not only hire staff who analyze clinical data, it’s also used to support scientists and their staff as they undertake important myeloma research,” said David Siegel, M.D., chief, Myeloma Division, John Theurer Cancer Center at HackensackUMC.  “Multiple myeloma still cannot be cured, but new treatments continue to be evaluated in research studies and substantial improvements in treatment have been made over the past few years, allowing many individuals with the disease to live longer, healthier lives.”

To honor the memory of their friend and colleague, the superintendents of Skanska fully intend to continue this event and support the Multiple Myeloma Fund.  The 2012 Dan Wurzburg Memorial Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, September 8.  All funds will benefit the Multiple Myeloma Fund through the HackensackUMC Foundation.

The John Theurer Cancer Center’s Multiple Myeloma Division is one of only a few facilities in the United States that offers expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and management of multiple myeloma, the second most common blood cancer. The division is also one of 13 academic institutions that comprise the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium (MMRC), a unique research model to accelerate the development of novel multiple myeloma treatments by catalyzing, promoting and facilitating collaborative research between industry and academia.
