Liancai Mu, M.D., Ph.D., senior scientist, Department of Research, David & Alice Jurist Research Center at HackensackUMC, and Ira Sanders, M.D., have published a breakthrough study entitled “A Three-Dimensional Atlas of Human Tongue Muscles,” which was featured in Science Magazine’s online news section, Science NOW.
The study addressed one of the most highly-complicated and least understood structures of the human body – the tongue. Although people constantly use their tongues, due to their complex nature, little information exists on how they actually work. Based on data from the Visible Human Project, Drs. Mu and Sanders were able to construct a 3-D computer image of the human tongue. This model enables researchers to have insight into each of the muscles that comprise the tongue, and how they related to each other.
“Congratulations to Drs. Mu and Sanders on the completion of this study,” said Robert Korngold, chairman, Research Department, HackensackUMC. “This new imagery of the tongue will help us understand its inner workings, and will lead to better and more accurate tongue disorder diagnoses for patients everywhere.”
