Hackensack University Medical Center is proud to be the only site in Bergen County offering Safe Sitter® training, a one-day babysitting course for teens ages 11 to 13. The training will take place on Saturday, June 30 at HackensackUMC from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“HackensackUMC prides itself on its community outreach and education, and we are pleased to offer this life-saving Safe Sitter training to our local young residents,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of HackensackUMC. “Babysitting is a tremendous responsibility and we are happy to share in the training for safe practices.”

Developed in 1980 by pediatrician Patricia A. Keener, M.D., Safe Sitter® is a medically-accurate instructional program designed for young adolescents which includes child-care techniques, basic first aid, rescue techniques, babysitting as a business, and online and cell phone safety. Since its inception, it has offered classes to more than 500,000 students at 900 teaching sites.  Safe Sitters® will learn: how, why and where injuries happen so they can prevent them; how to decide the seriousness of an injury if it does happen; how to get help, if needed;  how to keep themselves safe when babysitting or at home alone; how a child's age affects how to care for them; how to prevent problem behavior; how to rescue a choking infant or child; how to run a babysitting business; and how to perform infant and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Students must be at least 11 years old to register and the cost is $70 per student. Pre-registration is required and enrollment is limited. To enroll your son or daughter or your babysitter in the Safe Sitter® course scheduled for Saturday, June 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., please contact the HackensackUMC Life Support Training Center at 551-996-2401 or email: mail_cprtraining@hackensackumc.org. Scholarships are available based on financial need.
