Honey Bees Are Struggling with Their Own Pandemic

As the COVID-19 pandemic makes grimly clear, cities are arguably humanity’s greatest invention, but densely populated metropolises also make us vulnerable to the rapid spread of disease. Yet humans aren’t the only species that face this problem. Honey bees have lived social lives for tens of millions of years, making them some of the oldest veterans in the battle against contagion. And over time, natural selection has given them an impressive array of strategies for mitigating transmission within colonies. Sophisticated as they are, however, these strategies are not enough to stave off every threat.
