How plants TALK to each other: Flowers and trees warn neighbours when they're under attack by releasing chemicals into the wind

Plants have developed a warning cry to let each other know when they are under attack from pests, biologists have discovered.  When an insect takes a bite out of a leaf, flower or stalk, a smelly chemical will automatically be released as part of the plant's defences.  And now scientists have found that these so-called volatile organic compounds are also emitted to let other fellow species know of the immediate threats.  Read more...
