Ihor S. Sawczuk, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer at Hackensack University Medical Center, is the recipient of the prestigious Russell W. Lavengood Distinguished Service Award from the New York Section of the American Urological Association for his numerous contributions to society as well as to the field of urology. He received his award at the New York Section’s meeting in December.

Started in 1989, the Russell W. Lavengood Distinguished Service Award, honors those who have epitomized the concept of distinguished service. Dr. Sawczuk was selected based upon his extensive experience in urology spanning more than 25 years. He began his time with HackensackUMC more than 10 years ago as the chairman of the Department of Urology. His emphasis on cutting-edge technology has elevated the Department of Urology to one of the leading programs in the country, ranking number 25 out of nearly 1,500 hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, and being named one of HealthGrades® America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Prostatectomy™.
Dr. Sawczuk has spearheaded HackensackUMC’s annual Healthy Prostate Events, partnering with the New York Daily News and WABC-TV in offering free prostate testing events to the general community. To-date, these events have tested more than 26,000 men, and potentially saved the lives of more than 2,288 men. He is committed to academic advancement, which was evident in the oversight of HackensackUMC’s affiliation agreement with Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, signed in June of 2012.
He has received numerous other awards and accolades, including a humanitarian award from the office of First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton for his Chernobyl relief work, as well as NJBIZ Physician of the Year Award.
