A local charity is changing lives and creating lasting memories for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. Donate A, founded by Dan Geelan, of Suffern, New York, is continuing its good work by collecting unused tickets to sporting and entertainment events in the New York Metro area and donating them to local hospitals. Most recently, Donate A provided HackensackUMC with 250 tickets to a New York Mets game. Members of the medical staff are currently in the process of distributing these tickets to pediatric patients of the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital and their families who could not be more excited to attend.
“We are very grateful to Dan Geelan and the volunteers from Donate A for their hard work in providing our pediatric patients and their families access to premiere events, which they otherwise would not have,” said Alissa K. Sandler, LCSW, social work supervisor at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital and section chief of the SIDS Center of New Jersey. “This is truly an amazing and wonderful gift to our patients and their families and we sincerely thank Donate A for helping to create these very special memories.”
Dan Geelan, a cancer survivor, began Donate A in 2005 with the purpose of helping to improve the lives of others. The entire project is funded by ticket donations from various companies and individuals.
“Donate A was founded on the premise that good that can come from sharing,” said Geelan. “For some patients, a trip to a baseball game is the only time they will be with mom and dad away from the hospital. For others, it may be the first time they are going a professional sporting event altogether. I take great pride in this program and encourage companies and season-ticket holders who have tickets they aren’t going to use, to donate them to our charity. Together, we can lift spirits, one ticket at a time.”
In 2011, more than 1,000 tickets to Yankees and Mets games were donated to the patients of the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at HackensackUMC and their families. The value of these tickets exceeded $100,000.
In addition to sporting events, Donate A accepts tickets for circus performances as well as Broadway shows. For more information about Donate A or how you can share your event tickets, please visit www.DonateA.com
