Lead Detected in Drinking Water of Almost 1 in 5 California Schools

Almost 20 percent of California’s K-12 school campuses serve drinking water with detectable levels of lead.  The State Water Resources Control Board confirmed in an email to EWG that 1,166 out of 6,595 schools that submitted test results found at least one fountain that served water with more than 5 parts per billion, or ppb, of lead. Many schools that tested their drinking water did not test all of the drinking water fountains or faucets of potable water.  Although there is no safe level of exposure to lead, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that water from fountains in schools not exceed 1 ppb lead.  Read more....
