The Heart & Vascular Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center began as a vision to offer patients a new kind of cardiac care—one that brings the country’s best specialists together under one roof, utilizes the latest scientific data, and always puts your needs first. Every aspect of the Heart & Vascular Hospital has been planned to advance this vision. Our programs in interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery and stroke care have consistently placed us in the top 5% of hospitals in the nation, and earned us high marks with independent ratings agencies.  The Society of Chest Pain Centers has honored the Heart & Vascular Hospital as an Accredited Chest Pain Center. Additionally, we are ranked among the top 50 heart hospitals in the country by U.S. News and World Report—and are the highest ranked in the state of New Jersey for cardiology & heart surgery.

By promoting collaborative care, integrating tomorrow’s technology, improving clinical efficiency, and delivering the region’s broadest array of services as cost-effectively as possible, we continue to grow as a leading center for cardiovascular health. The Clinical Cardiology section has over 142 cardiologists supplying a comprehensive range of clinical services from primary prevention of cardiovascular disease to the most advanced interventions for advanced disease to cardiac rehabilitation for secondary prevention of cardiac events.

A World-Class Team in a State-of-the-Art Cardiac Treatment Facility

The Heart and Vascular Hospital’s world-class cardiologists and facilities offer the latest innovations in cardiac care and state-of-the-art diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures. Their practice locations cover much of northern New Jersey and southern New York State. Our care embodies the concept of “patient centered care”. We personalize the diagnostic and treatment plans to meet your needs with the goal of treating the right patient in the right place, at the right time, at the right price. We utilize a team approach with nurse practitioners, magnet nurses and other specialized personnel to provide the highest quality care. Our cardiologists are not only available for out-patient visits, but there is a cardiologist on call 24/7 for the Emergency Department and the Observation Unit. In addition, there is an interventional cardiologist and full cardiac team of nurses and technicians available within 20 minutes for emergent intervention for patients with an acute heart attack. The clinical cardiologists work with cardiac and vascular surgeons to provide the appropriate highest quality care.

By driving clinical excellence in each aspect of our institution, the Heart & Vascular Hospital aims to become a world-class destination for cardiovascular care in the New Jersey region and beyond. The new Heart & Vascular Hospital is the embodiment of our promise to always serve the needs of our community. The culmination of years of research and planning, this state-of-the–art “hospital within a hospital” brings our cardiovascular services and specialists together under one roof – enabling the kind of multidisciplinary model that is the future of cardiac care.

Beyond Heart Surgery — A Passion for Preventing Heart Disease

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States; one in every three deaths is from heart disease and stroke.  Approximately 2200 Americans die from heart disease each day. Fortunately, as many as 80% of these cardiac deaths can be prevented.   Heart disease is not only treatable but preventable. Risk factor assessment is essential in determining the likelihood of developing heart disease and can be categorized into modifiable (smoking, hypertension, cholesterol, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes) and non-modifiable (family history, advanced age) risk factors. Many novel new screening tools such as looking at inflammation in the blood vessel wall, a major cause of heart attack--have been identified, giving us the opportunity to help the very high risk population by intervening early. After identifying risk factors, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise will also assist in keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol levels at a normal range.
