Advocacy & Support
Emphasis on Safety
The Betty Torricelli Institute for Breast Care’s commitment to safety extends to everything we do, from exam room procedure to leading edge research. We pay special attention to minimizing radiation exposure without giving up image quality. We employ physicists and engineers to calibrate and maintain our equipment at the highest level and we invest to replace outdated equipment and bring the latest technology to our patients.
Advocacy and Support
At Hackensack University Medical Center, we believe that support services, information and education are critical to the healing process. You’ll have access to a wide range of psychosocial support services that will help you and your family better cope with cancer.
Psychosocial Support Groups
A network of counseling services and support groups offered at The Cancer Center gives patients the opportunity to share their experiences with an experienced counselor, as well as other women who are facing the same issues and difficulties.
Special support groups include: one for breast cancer patients, one for “Persons Living with Cancer,” a group for caregivers, one for those undergoing bone marrow or peripheral stem cell transplantation and a creative arts support group for children of breast cancer patients. Our support groups meet the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 PM. The meetings are held in The John Theurer Cancer Center’s conference room.
Support group discussions may include:
-
Coping with the feelings of loss, sadness and fear.
-
Adjusting to the changes in self-concept and body image.
-
Treatment options.
-
Managing the side effects of treatment.
-
Communicating with family members, friends and physicians.
-
Ways to reduce stress.
-
What community resources are available.
-
Community Health Fairs where information about breast health is distributed.
-
Educational corporate health programs brought directly to the worksite.
Activities are conducted with the American Cancer Society, The Susan G. Komen Foundation and other local groups to raise breast cancer awareness.
