Our bones may experience some loss as we age, which over time can lead to a condition called osteoporosis. Your doctor may prescribe a bone density scan. A bone density scan is a painless procedure that determines whether such bone loss is occurring in your body. 

Bone Density Procedures

Bone densitometry is a radiological procedure, which measures the density of bones. Bone density exams can be used to determine the strength or weakness of a bone. They are crucial to assessing the bone’s probability of fracturing. 

Before Your Procedure

Bone density exams are painless and completely non-invasive.  

In order to prepare for exam patients should:

  • Inform the technologist if you are or think you might be pregnant.

  • Feel free to eat a normal diet on the day of the exam.

  • Take your medications as normally prescribed by your physician.

  • On the day of the test, wear clothes that are free of metal buttons and metal zippers (plastic buttons are safe).

Bone Density exams are generally 10 to 15 minutes in length, during which a computerized imaging device passes over you as you lie on the table and generates x-ray images of your bones. 

After Your Procedure

There are no precautions to take after an exam. Resume normal activities. Your physician will receive a copy of the report from our Radiology Department within 3 to 5 business days.
