What is a Hysterosalpingogram? 

A hysterosalpingogram is also called HSG. A HSG is an X-ray procedure. The exam uses contrast dye to show the fallopian tubes and the shape of the uterine cavity. It is usually performed 7-10 days after your period. 

How Do I Prepare for a HSG?     

There is no prep for this exam. However, it is important to schedule the exam 7-10 days after the onset of your period. Before the exam, tell your doctor and/or technologist if you are or might be pregnant or are breastfeeding. 

You will be asked to read and sign a consent form for this exam. You will be asked to wear a hospital gown during the exam.

Information to Bring

Before your procedure bring your insurance information, personal identification, prescription for the exam and any prior studies and reports for comparison to today’s scan.

What Happens During the Exam?

You will be asked to lie on an X-ray table and your legs will be put up in stirrups (leg holders).  A dye is injected through the cervix. This dye helps to outline the uterus and fallopian tubes.  After the dye is injected, an X-ray is taken.

What Happens After the Exam?

An HSG may cause mild or moderate cramping for a few minutes. However, some women may have cramps for several hours. To reduce the cramps please do what you normally would do for period cramps. If you have any questions about what to take, please contact your doctor. After the exam, you may experience some spotting for 1 to 2 days. If heavy bleeding occurs, contact your doctor.

You can return to your normal activities and usual diet unless told otherwise by your doctor.

When Do I Get the Results?

You can expect your physician to receive a written report within 3 to 5 working days.
