You are in good hands with the renowned physicians at the Orthopaedic Institute.  We understand that you have concerns prior to surgery, which is why we’ve answered the common questions to ensure that you have an excellent patient experience.

Q: Why should I choose HackensackUMC for my joint replacement care?

Q: Do you offer a class or information session for patients scheduled for joint replacement surgery at HackensackUMC?

A: Yes. Classes are offered twice a month. Discovering how to prepare for your surgery, what to expect during your hospital stay and what to expect after you leave the hospital will be covered during class. We recommend taking this class two to four weeks before your surgery. We encourage a family member or another support person to attend class with you. We fully support their involvement and assistance they will provide you with through this process. Q: How much pain will I have after the surgery?

A: Your comfort is very important throughout your stay.  Pain relief is addressed by both nursing and physician staff who are specialized in pain management.  We believe this multidisciplinary approach provides optimal care.  Additional information regarding pain management is included in this binder.

Q: How long will I be in the hospital following my total joint replacement?

A: Typically following a total joint replacement, you will have a 1-3 day stay in the hospital. During your stay, you will meet with a case manager and/or social worker, who will assist you with your discharge plans. Based on your recovery status, the rehabilitation staff and your physician will provide you with discharge recommendations.

Q:  Will I have specialized Orthopaedic nursing care following my joint replacement surgery?

A:  HackensackUMC has been achieved Magnet® designation, healthcare’s most prestigious nursing recognition.  Nursing care is provided by our team of nurses, many of whom have specialized orthopaedic certification.  Additionally, a dedicated joint replacement nursing coordinator will supervise your care, providing a personalized level of service throughout your hospitalization.
