Rummana Aslam, MD is the Medical Director of the Center for Advanced Wound Care at HackensackUMC in New Jersey. Dr. Aslam’s began a distinguished career in wound healing after completing residencies in Ophthalmology, Surgery and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation followed by extensive fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco in Trauma and Burns/Wound Healing and in Surgical Critical Care at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore. During that time she performed cutting edge research in wound healing and hyperbaric medicine. Dr. Aslam served as an expert panel member for the National Institute of Health participating in writing the guidelines for the treatment of pressure ulcers and venous ulcers which were presented at a forum on the NIH Campus in 2005 and then published in the December 2006 and April 2008 issues of the Wound Repair and Regeneration Journal. Dr. Aslam’s basic science research focused on the role of oxygen and lactate in the biochemistry of tissue repair and her design included an in vivo wound model focusing on the role of lactate in neovascularization. She is currently working on developing an interdisciplinary model for rehabilitation of patients with chronic wounds, focusing on improving patient quality of life. She is an active member of the Pressure Ulcer Standards Group, the Venous Ulcer Standards Group and the Arterial Ulcer Standards Group of the Wound Healing Society and Wound Healing Foundation since 2004 and is the President-Elect of RMCAANA. In 2006 Dr. Aslam received the Young Investigator Research Award from the Wound Healing Society for outstanding achievement in clinical and laboratory research. A peer nominated award was also presented to her for Excellence in Teaching of medical students and residents by the University of California, San Francisco. Additionally she received the Gerald Felsenthal MD Resident Excellence Award from the Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in association with the University of Maryland Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for exemplifying excellence in academics, teaching, community service and superior clinical care. In addition to her busy practice she continues to mentor residents, fellows and students in wound healing and research.
Annette Schmidt - Program Director
With a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing Annette comes to the Center for Advanced Wound Care with 25 years experience in healthcare. Annette worked in nursing education for 8 years before moving to the Department of Surgery where she assisted the Chairman and Educational Directors in the administration of, and support of the academic activities for the department, residency program and medical student program. Annette is an avid reader and enjoys spending time with her three young grandsons.
Joyce Yejoon Park, RN - Hyperbaric and Wound Care Nurse
Joyce received her BSN from Seton Hall University in December 2011 and is a proud member of the Wound Care Team bringing with her an expertise in surgical nursing and highly developed skills working in a high pressure environment. Joyce is known for her gentle manner and devotion to her patients. A newlywed and bi-lingual in English/Korean, Joyce looks forward to seeing her patients every day and providing the best in patient care.
Janet Santos, RN - Wound Care Nurse
Dedicated and compassionate are words that patients use to describe Janet. She has a proven track record in nursing with 8 years of qualified nursing experience and demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with patients and their families. Janet is the mother of two children and is bi-lingual in English/Spanish.
Nelson Jose, LPN - Hyperbaric Technician
Nelson has had a varied career from working on a cruise ship to working in healthcare as a licensed practical nurse. He found his niche in healthcare where he has provided nursing care to adult patients in a nursing home setting. He has joined the team of the wound center in the capacity of Hyperbaric Technician and brings experience in the safe and effective care of patients. Nelson is a world traveler, bilingual in English and Hindi, the national language of India.
Jade Berdugo, R.C.S. - Wound Care Assistant
Jade is not only a registered cardiac sonographer but also a registered medical assistant. Patients always comment on her vivacious personality and professional demeanor. She is bilingual in English and Spanish and welcomes patients to the facility as if they were members of her family. Like all the staff of the Wound Center, Jade successfully completed the 40 hr hyberbaric medicine introductory training course (UHMS designated). Her hobby is jewelry making.
Erika Rosero, MA - Wound Care Assistant
A certified medical assistant graduating in 2004, Erika has focused her career working with patients with chronic wounds. She is patient-centered and can always be counted on for her dedication to producing the highest quality of care for her patients. Erika is fluent in Spanish and English and always has a smile for her patients. Erika enjoys spending her free time with her little girl.
