About Us
The Department of Biological Resources (DBR) is charged with furnishing humane care for non-human vertebrate animals used in research, in accordance with Animal Welfare Act and OPRR-PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. We strive to facilitate the research efforts of scientists with regard to procurement, initiation, and implementation of animal research studies, and to comply with the standards of all regulatory and accrediting agencies and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The DBR institutes and improves Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all aspects of the daily operation, including but not limited to administration, husbandry, safety, colony maintenance, animal health program, equipment operation, quality control, biological monitoring, and training.
What We Do
The Manager of DBR is responsible for the overall day-to-day operation of the DBR facility, including but not limited to: maintaining the department business system, security system, occupational health program as it pertains to special needs of the animal facility and DBR staff, training for the DBR staff, surgery schedule and billing. The Manager is also a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
Our Clinical Veterinarian responsible for providing veterinary medical care to all animals in the facility. He provides professional oversight to a variety of programs required for animal care and use, such as review all protocols prior to their implementation and oversee the programs for anesthesia, analgesia, euthanasia and pre- and post operative care and the animal health surveillance program. The Clinical Veterinarian is available to consult with principle investigators as may be required. He is also responsible for the animal handling and orientation training program that the research staff must attend prior to working with the laboratory animals under the DBR’s purview. All surgical and other complicated manipulations are reviewed by the Clinical Veterinarian prior to implementation. His is also a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
