No surgery is routine, especially when your child is involved. At Hackensack University Medical Center, your child’s wellness is our number one concern. We look at all surgeries from a patient’s perspective—all patients have unique needs, but this is particularly true when it comes to children.  Our surgeons perform minimally invasive and conventional pediatric surgeries using state-of-the-art technology and the latest techniques.  During treatment our pediatric surgical team works to build trust and help your child communicate with us, verbally or nonverbally. From your first office visit to your final follow-up appointment, we care about your child's experience.

Pediatric Surgery at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital

Most procedures will be performed in the Pediatric Operating Suites of the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, an extraordinary environment designed from the ground up to be a place of healing for children.  The architecture and interior design evoke playfulness, friendliness and well-being, and complement the world-class level of care that children receive.   The operating suites are decorated with detailed murals from floor to ceiling to keep your child relaxed and cheerful. The décor contrasts comfortably with the latest technology—from leading edge medical vision systems to robotic surgical arms.

Some procedures may also be performed at the Center for Ambulatory Surgery in the Medical Plaza Building, which is also designed to be a child-friendly environment.

At Hackensack University Medical Center, we go beyond traditional thinking.  Nowhere is this more evident than in our work with children.  As a New Jersey state-designated Children's Hospital, Hackensack University Medical Center meets the state's highest standards for children's healthcare.  This designation sets the medical center's program apart from other pediatric programs because of its broad scope and commitment to pediatric medicine.

The medical center was recently ranked among the top 25 Children's Hospitals in the nation by Child magazine, and received the Gold Seal of Approval™ for Healthcare Quality from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) for pediatric care.

The medical center is a major teaching affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School. Often, medical students and pediatric residents accompany our pediatricians during office visits.

Making your child feel at home

Before his or her procedure, your child can play in our playroom, equipped with a TV, video library, and age-appropriate toys selected by a child-life specialist.

We encourage your child to bring a favorite toy or item from home, such as a doll or a blanket, which can help lessen fears and also relax your son or daughter.

When it is time to go to the operating room, your child is given the option to ride in one of our red wagons. The child wears a colorful helmet. You can accompany your youngster into the operating room and remain until the child is asleep, please discuss this option with your surgeon.

Parents rejoin their children when they awaken in the recovery room. Your presence will help reduce anxiety for both you and your child.

The Pediatric Ambulatory Service is staffed by pediatricians and certified pediatric advanced practice nurses. While most care is given on an outpatient basis, our pediatricians will care for the child who needs hospitalization during their stay at Hackensack University Medical Center.
