Vascular surgery is a specialty discipline that involves the diagnosis and treatment of blood vessel disorders throughout the body, with the exception of the heart, both medically and surgically. The majority of these disorders is a result of arterioscleroses (hardening of the arteries) or disorders of the veins.
Diseases of the carotid arteries with risk of stroke; obstruction or blockage of blood vessels to legs, causing pain and/or risk of gangrene to the legs; and abdominal aortic aneurysms (ballooning of the artery) which have the risk of rupture and death, are among the arterial disorders treated.
Varicose veins, blood clots in the leg veins, embolism, and chronic leg swelling and leg ulcers, are among the vein conditions treated.
The Division of Vascular Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center is comprised of the Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory and Endovascular Surgery. The Section of Vascular Surgery provides diagnostic services through its accredited Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory. Minimally-invasive surgery and endovascular surgery are newer techniques being utilized in appropriate cases, as are newer medical and non-operative approaches.
Utilizing state-of-the-art equipment, physicians in the Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory perform a painless evaluation of the status of the cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular circulation. They provide service on both an elective and emergent basis (such as to evaluate deep vein thrombosis or DVT) upon referral from your personal physician. In the Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory services are used as an adjunct to clinical evaluation to hemodynamicallly assess clinical evaluation, screen patients who are at risk for vascular disease, monitor the physiologic progress of disease, and in post-operative follow-up.
Professionals in The Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory at Hackensack University Medical Center perform more than 19,000 diagnostic procedures each year. We are accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories and have been providing diagnostic evaluations of patients with vascular problems since 1981.
