Polydatin, a precursor of resveratrol, may help prevent heart disease

Resveratrol is a polyphenolic plant compound known for its antioxidant activities. It is commonly found in the skin of red grapes and used as a supplement due to its health benefits. Aside from lowering blood pressure, resveratrol is also praised for its ability to protect brain function and lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels. In a recent study published in The American Journal of Chinese Medicine, researchers from Southern Medical University in China found that polydatin, a natural precursor of resveratrol, may also offer the heart some benefits. Their experiments showed that polydatin can modulate cholesterol metabolism in macrophages, which are immune cells involved in the inflammatory process associated with atherosclerosis. The researchers believe that polydatin has the ability to relieve injuries caused by this cardiovascular disease.  Read more....
