Shocking study finds microplastics in 50% of freshwater insects as scientists warn it's not just oceans that have become polluted

Microplastics are far more widespread in rivers than previously thought, scientists have found.  A shocking study in South Wales rivers found microplastic fragments - pieces of plastic debris under five millimetres - ingested by one in every two insects, and at all the sites sampled.  It has sparked global fears that the effects of plastic pollution are far worse than thought, as previous studies have focused on ocean pollution.  Read more...
