Sugars from the molluscs are as effective as some chemotherapy drugs, study reveals

Cockles could be used to treat cancer, a study has claimed.  Trials have found sugars extracted from the seaside snack are able to stop various types of tumour cells from growing.  And scientists say their 'cockle-chemo' could be useful for treating children with cancer because it may be more tolerable and cause fewer side effects.  The molluscs could be cheaper and equally as effective as some traditional chemotherapy drugs.  Researchers tested the unusual therapy on leukaemia, breast, lung and bowel cancer tumours and said their results were encouraging.  Read more...
