More than 1,000 runners and community residents came together on Saturday, April 28 to raise more than $250,000 for the first annual “Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial 5K Run.”
The run, held in honor of the late Saddle River resident, Susan Zabransky Hughes, was hosted by The Friends of Hackensack University Medical Center, the Borough of Saddle River, and the Hughes and Zabransky families. Saddle River Mayor Samuel Raia joined members of the Run for Sue Committee and local residents at the five-kilometer race, which began at the Saddle River Firehouse and ended with refreshments and an awards ceremony at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.
“The overwhelming response and participation in the run is a direct testament to the type of woman that Susan Zabransky Hughes was,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of HackensackUMC. “Susan lost her battle with cervical cancer in July of 2011 at the age of 46. Although this was a tragedy, her loss spawned the birth of this great community effort. I’d like to thank all of you – we are more than 1,000 strong today! We will all ensure that a dream will become a reality through Susan’s Suite.”
Susan, an avid runner and mother of two, was treated at the John Theurer Cancer Center at HackensackUMC, and her friends and family have pledged to raise $1 million to build Susan’s Suite, a dedicated 10-bed treatment area for cancer patients in the soon-to-be renovated Emergency and Trauma Center at HackensackUMC. The $250,000 raised at the run will be applied to this $1 million pledge.
The 33,000-square-foot Emergency and Trauma Center expansion, expected to be completed in 2013, will incorporate more operating rooms, new technologies and equipment and feature specialty sections for cardiac, geriatric and trauma emergency patients, as well as cancer patients.
