HackensackUMC Honored As A National Leader For Environmental Excellence For A Second Year In A Row

May 2015-HackensackUMC is pleased to announce that it has earned Practice Greenhealth’s highest honor as a 2015 Environmental Excellence Award winner, earning recognition once again as one of the top 25 green hospitals in the country.
“HackensackUMC prioritizes green practices in our day-to-day operations as an organizational imperative. Our sustainability efforts have placed us as a top tier hospital,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of the Hackensack University Health Network.“It’s an honor to be recognized for our commitment to the health and safety of our patients and their families, our healthcare team and the communities we serve. I congratulate our team for achieving this impressive distinction.”
The Top 25 Environmental Excellence Awards recognize healthcare facilities that exemplify environmental excellence and are setting the highest standards for environmental practices in healthcare. Programs were rated according to a rigorous scoring system. Sustainability program evaluations ranged from leadership, waste, chemicals, greening the operating room, food and environmentally preferable purchasing; to energy, water, climate and green building.
Practice Greenhealth announced the Circles of Excellence recognitions for honoring hospitals for outstanding performance in one specific topic area. HackensackUMC was honored for outstanding performance in healthcare sustainability in the areas of Leadership, Chemicals, Environmentally Preferable Purchasing and Climate.
In addition, HackensackUMC achieved the HealthTrust Social Stewardship award in recognition of its leadership in sustainability in the supply chain. HackensackUMC has increased recycling and decreased tonnage of regulated medical waste, saving more than 4,000 reams of paper. Water use was reduced by 18 percent through landscape irrigation changes, linen reduction throughout the medical center and towel reductions in OR kits. Overall energy use intensity improved by 1.6 percent.

Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards were presented in Portland, Oregon May 14 at the CleanMed Conference & Exhibition, the premier national environmental conference for leaders in health care sustainability.
