The Auxiliary of HackensackUMC Makes a Meaningful Difference and Marks a Record Year of Fundraising

June 5, 2013 12:05 PM

In a record year of fundraising, the Auxiliary of HackensackUMC raised a total of $457,000.  Fueled by a strong commitment to volunteerism, the Auxiliary continues a tradition of generating significant contributions to support their initiatives throughout HackensackUMC.

The Auxiliary’s accomplishments were celebrated as new leadership was installed during a luncheon at Sanzari’s New Bridge Inn in New Milford. Ann Marie Saccaro stepped down, after three years, as president to serve as the Auxiliary’s vice president. Peggy Liosi will serve as the Auxiliary president for the second time.

Hackensack University Health Network President and Chief Executive Officer Robert C. Garrett acknowledged the Auxiliary’s “rich history.” As HackensackUMC marks its 125th anniversary, Garrett noted the Auxiliary predates the medical center by one year. The Auxiliary is a “true partner” in the Foundation’s mission to connect generous people with opportunities to make a meaningful difference.

Dr. Andre Goy, chairman and director of the John Theurer Cancer Center at HackensackUMC, graciously thanked Auxiliary members as he received a gift of $50,000, formally securing the Auxiliary as a presenting sponsor of the fifth annual Celebrating Life and Liberty Event at Liberty State Park which will be held on September 29, 2013. At last year’s event, more than 4,000 patients and their loved ones, caregivers and members of the HackensackUMC staff gathered to share personal stories, take part in interactive workshops and experience moving songs and poems created by cancer survivors.

The balance of funds raised by the Auxiliary from May of 2012 through May of 2013, $407,000, will go toward the overall Auxiliary pledge of $2.5 million to benefit the Heart & Vascular Hospital and the John Theurer Cancer Center. A significant portion of the funds were generated through sales at the Corner Shops at HackensackUMC along with the Green Caboose Thrift Shop and events including an employee sponsored Zumba-thon and a wine tasting.

Moving in to prom season, the Green Caboose is actively appealing for dress donations. The shop is located at 86 Orchard Street in Hackensack. Proceeds benefit patients and programs at HackensackUMC.
